Frequently Asked Questions

Medicare Open Enrollment: Deadlines and How to Navigate Them

The Medicare Open Enrollment Period (also known as the Annual Enrollment Period or AEP) is from October 15 to December 7 each year. During this time, you can make changes to your Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D plan for the following year.
During AEP, you can switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage, change Medicare Advantage plans, or join, drop, or switch Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage) plans.
If you miss the Open Enrollment Period, you may have to wait until the following year unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), which is triggered by life events such as moving, losing other insurance coverage, or qualifying for Medicaid.

Medicare Part D: How to Choose the Right Prescription Drug Coverage

Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage and is included in many Medicare Advantage Plans. You can also get it as a standalone plan if you have Original Medicare.
When choosing a Medicare Part D plan, consider your current medications, preferred pharmacies, and the plan’s drug formulary (a list of covered drugs). We can help you find a plan that covers your medications at the lowest cost.
If you don’t sign up for Medicare Part D when you are first eligible and you don’t have other creditable prescription drug coverage, you may face a late enrollment penalty when you do enroll.

Understanding Medicare Advantage Plans: Simplifying Plan Options

A Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. These plans are offered by private insurance companies and include Medicare Part A (hospital insurance), Part B (medical insurance), and sometimes Part D (prescription drug coverage), along with additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing care.

There are several types of Medicare Advantage Plans, including:

  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO): Requires you to use network providers and obtain referrals for specialists.
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO): Offers more flexibility in choosing healthcare providers, including out-of-network options.
  • Special Needs Plans (SNP): Tailored for people with specific diseases or characteristics.
Choosing the right plan depends on your healthcare needs, preferred doctors, medication requirements, and budget. We can help you compare plans based on coverage options, out-of-pocket costs, and provider networks.

For Those Turning 65 Soon:

You should enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which begins 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after your birthday. This is your best opportunity to enroll in Medicare Part A, Part B, and Part D without any penalties
As you approach 65, you’ll have access to Medicare Advantage plans, which often include prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, and wellness benefits. We can help you compare plans based on your specific needs.
Original Medicare includes Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical), but it doesn’t cover everything like prescription drugs, dental, or vision. Medicare Advantage is a more comprehensive option that bundles these coverages into one plan and often provides additional benefits like wellness programs.
